Robin Kick, Master of Wine

Born: 25 September in Lake Forest, IL, USA
Based: Lugano, Switzerland

Date made Master of Wine: September 2014

Who is Robin Kick?

"I was born into a family who drank wine, but mostly jug wine. So, when I was young, I thought wine was terrible. My mother used to cook and bake a lot and this is what triggered my fascination with tasting, flavours and textures. This interest eventually had a big influence on my wine career as I sought out more understanding of what characteristics are associated with which wine.

The first wine that I liked was an inexpensive Pinot Grigio because it was fresh, dry and non-offensive. This encouraged me to think that there was more to wine than what I had experienced up to then. I moved to Paris in 1988 for university studies and it was here where I began drinking more wine and enjoying it – mostly inexpensive red Bordeaux that were made for easy drinking."

Which is in your opinion the relationship between wine and music, travel, literature?

"Wine is a living thing that evolves and changes with time and can change its personality depending on the weather, atmospheric pressure and many other undeterminable influences such as the mood of the drinker. I think this is one reason why wine lovers are so passionate about it. You never really know what you are going to get and even a wine that you know well can be different each time you open up a bottle. Like art, literature or music, it not only reveals its story, sense of place and the “mark” of its maker in each bottle, but it also connects with its audience in different ways depending on the personal experiences and preferences of each. "

Which is in your opinion the role of wine in people’s life?

"Wine means different things to different people. Some just drink it as they would a soda or juice. But some people drink wine just to get drunk, while for others, it is a spiritual experience, a search for a deeper connection to the universe. Usually the more expensive the wine, the more complex it is and the more layers of its “story” it has to reveal."

Cosa significa essere Master of Wine?

What does being a Master of Wine mean? And what does it mean to Robin Kick?

"To the general wine world, A Master of Wine is the greatest accolade a person can have. In order to be called an “MW”, one must first pass an exam that lasts almost a week and includes blind tastings and essays about all aspects of grape growing, winemaking, the business of wine as well as current events. Once a candidate has passed the exam, they must write a dissertation based on original research. I am not sure what the exact pass rate is exactly, but it is reputed to be around 10% or less, and as a result, the title itself is very respected. For me, the Master of Wine title is two things. It is first a gateway to achieving greater things. It cannot be denied that I will be given more opportunities to achieve, create and inspire, especially in the male-dominated wine world. However, it is also a mark of personal achievement. I have never worked so hard in my life for anything. There were many many times that I wanted to quit because the stress was too great. But during those times, I wondered how to view all my previous sacrifice. Sure, the journey was important, but if I actually arrived at the destination, wouldn’t that be even more spectacular? It forced me to learn more about myself and also revealed my capabilities."

"There is a fun wine bar in Beaune where young winemakers go (Bar du Square). Besides their great wine list, they play legendary music, capturing the Rock ‘n Roll spirit. Jacques Dutronc has featured on their playlist. He is a French icon, and so is Burgundy. They both embody the French spirit so beautifully."

"The first wine region that I visited would also become the region that I love the most. With my boyfriend at the time, we spent a night in Beaune in 1990 en route to Germany. I had never seen such a beautiful place before with all of its autumnal coloured roofs and cobbled streets. It is an incredible sight to behold. It was also the first time that I had Coq au Vin accompanied by a smooth, delicious, ethereal red Burgundy, and I knew I was hooked. I eventually came back to Beaune in 1996 and 1997 for two wine tasting courses, and many times after as a Burgundy wine buyer. But it was these two courses that inspired my career in wine. Burgundy wine has that kind of impact on people. You will never meet anyone more passionate than a Burgundy lover."

Cosa proporresti?

Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges 2007, Thibault Liger Belair

"Nuits St. Georges is the capital of the Cote de Nuits. Their Les Saint Georges vineyard is viewed as their greatest. Thibault’s 2007 reminds me why I love Pinot Noir from this Midas-touched region so much. It opens onto the palate with its ample sappy flavours and flirts with a charming, sweet and sour personality. Incredibly moreish, one bottle is just not enough!"

*Bottiglia da 75 cl. da 60 Euro
